Day 130 Bundagen Monday 15th October 2012

Evening folks,

I was enjoying the warmth of the outside shower just before dusk. When i say outside it is enclosed by above waist height walls. I must take a picture to show you. Anyway i digress. I was thinking that as we travel examining different locations and lifestyles and decide where and how we might settle we really have the best of both worlds at the moment. We experience the lifestyle however we are never in one place long enough to get bored or have to endure the less savoury aspects of property ownership. Whether it be bills, neighbours or being tied to one's property by the need to provide care to animals or crops. When the weather is so stable as it is here then it is doubly enjoyable.

Looking southwards

Since the air was so still this morning i took the opportunity to stroll to the beach for a quick look and to paddle my feet in the saltwater. It seems a waste to me not to enjoy this everyday since it is a whole 5 minutes walk. This morning i saw an azure kingfisher but was far too incompetent to capture it on film.

Does this bloke look like he knows what he is doing?

The mechanics of the days tasks was Susan, gardening with me banging in star droppers and putting up irrigation hose for the tunnel to be constructed for the dwarf peach trees. This will be netted with fruit fly mesh. I also grouted in the bolts to the pump slab and prepared the inlet pipe for same. I jerry rigged our new solar panel connection and it worked so i made a proper loom tonight just before dusk.

However I should cover the task that I had first up. As you may remember from past blogs we are are using a standalone composting toilet. Susan won the raffle this morning when the lid would not slide closed since the bucket was full. Being a gentlemen I volunteered to perform the task and consulted Shuny about what went where. The contents were in a biodegradable plastic bag in the bucket. There was some discussion about whether it could be dropped into the house long drop. After a brief risk assessment with respect to the weight of the bag, the likelihood it would split and the chance of a clean drop into the house long drop without it getting stuck, I decided, the pour in the compost accelerator and put the lid on it for 6 months method would be easiest especially since we had a clean replacement bucket and supply of bags. Anyway it wasn't too horrible although i did discard my rubber gloves afterwards. Funnily enough the plastic bag with all the used paper goes away in the rubbish to the dump. I am sure your lives are better for knowing the mechanics of organic living and the fact we are doing our bit to save water and the planet.

Tea was atlantic salmon cutlets plus fresh garden vegetables, asparagus, silver beet and pumpkin.

Tonight Susan is helping Shunyam with some pattern making for a rug to be made in Bhutan while I sit here typing with Rod Laver's story and now Lance Armstrong's running in the background.

Another warm sunny day for tomorrow and should be some good progress photos tomorrow night.

Night folks

Cheers Simon
