Day 41 Nubeena Monday 7th March 2011

It's a tough job but somebodies got to do it!

Decks by 2

Hi All,
First up i'll start with what i forgot yesterday. My laptop died, well it wouldn't boot, had a faulty RAM chip which took me a little while to work out. I am not sure if that was the only problem I am currently testing the Solid State Hard Drive.
Anyway moving on Susan started with a short burst of housekeeping before meandering up the road to Helen and Bobs to help out on the farm. On her return she had a spa before serving drinks to the horde of bikies that rolled up around 6. Then it was into the kitchen to help Amel with the shared tea.

I had perfect weather for applying the water based varnish on the deck, cloudy. When the varnish was done the sun came out and the breeze blew, perfect. The second deck looks better than the first as I changed my technique. Water based varnish colour varies with the thickness of the coating so it's a bit of a buggar to get it to look even. I then swung over to "rounding up" some weeds along the roadways and paths before mounting a pegboard in the shipping container and trying to figure out which rechargeable drill batteries and chargers were working. Speaking of chargers my you beaut 20 amp charger wasn't working tonight after I loaned it to the boss yesterday. I took it apart pressed here and there and it came good fortunately.

A good weather day with a northerly breeze. It has now clouded over so i guess it is back to rain for us! One more day of work and we are off for a week or so.

Cheers Simon

Day 40 Nubeena Sunday March 6th 2011

Hello readers,

First off I left out one thing from yesterday. I also performed the perennial task of emptying and drying out the roof bag. What trip would be complete with out this chore. We did have a fair bit of rain however there are a host of new splits in the inner liner coinciding with where the tackle boxes are located. Maybe the straps were too tight. Anyway half a pound of polyurethane sealer later and it might be ready to go again.

On to today. I applied one coat of varnish to the rear deck with a different technique than the first one and it actually looks more even. I was going to apply the second coat after lunch however both units had been occupied and I thought the better of lurking around their back doors so I will do it first thing tomorrow. Susan did housekeeping plus training of another new helpexer before finishing off her painting.

The main issue of the day was consideration of the offer to become the more than just helpexers. We have decided to give it a go. At the very least we will add a skill set that will make us more versatile in the future and earn a few dollars. We are going to spend a few days away from the resort enjoying the countryside probably leaving Tuesday afternoon for 7 days or so. Hopefully the weather will be kind. We have to vacate our room for the school kid party so it's no great hassle since we have to move out anyway. Plus we get out of doing the final clean of the room hehe. Unless we don't settle into this role our idea of doing the census work is on the back burner. However as with all things we never say never.

Cheers Simon

Day 39 Nubeena Saturday 5th of March 2011

Hi folks,

Ahh Sunshine today and lots of it! After our late night we awoke at 905 an unheard of hour! Susan dashed over to reception to find out the news with respect to today's jobs.

I started work at 9:30. First job was to fit a new timer switch to the drier in the laundry. Which didn't restore it to life. Apparently the drier had stopped working and the parts guy contacted by the boss told him he needed a new one @ $190. Further investigation revealed a blown fuse in the machine and a tripped circuit breaker. Repair completed for parts cost of about 50 cents. Our leader is happy as he will return the new timer for a refund! It was then on to sanding the deck. I was determined to finish it today even though it meant working until 5. The weather forecast is good so the two coats of varnish go on tomorrow and it is finally done!

Susan completed her painting today, well almost, she got me to do some filling on the rails so that should be completed tomorrow too!

After a spa she adjourned to the kitchen with Adey (from Taiwan) to prepare tea. Tea was terrific. A spicy pumpkin soup (Susan) followed by fish, rice, stir fry, and a green fish curry (Adey) and for dessert bread and butter pudding (Susan) washed down with the obligatory glasses of wine.

We had our chat this afternoon with Ilan and Lynne re our plans. We have been offered 10 hours of paid work each on top of our helpex commitment. This has arisen because the current helpers doing the job are leaving in a couple of weeks. The main drawback in my eyes is more responsibility and less leisure time. Susan would pick up overseeing the housekeeping and laundry as well as opening, closing and after hours reception. I would get to do the pools, grounds, animals, incidental maintenance, supervising the helpers and rubbish, compost and recycling. At this stage the job would be for as long as we want it.

So there is something for us to think about for the next day or so!
We have another crowd of bikies filling the place up on Monday so that will be interesting as well.

Cheers for now

Simon

Day 38 Nubeena Friday March 4th 2011

Hi Folks,

Absolutely dirty weather day here today. Windy, rainy and cold. Didn't attempt to start sanding the deck and pottered for most of the day. The main task performed was starting to clean out the shipping container which is supposed to be the maintenance shed not a dumping ground.

Susan spent the day cleaning out the pantry and sorting out the hardware for the curtain making and mounting.

After tea we got side tracked reading posts on damnyouautocorrect.com As a result of this we didn't get to bed until 100am.

In short an average day with diabolical weather. It can only get better!

Cheers Simon

Day 37 Nubeena Thursday 3rd March 2011

Evenin' folks,
Weather is always a good conversation starter. Coldest start to March in Tasmania in 54 years. Mount Wellington at 8am -2C but when the wind chill was factored in it was equivalent to -16C! We had helpexers who went on their day off to Mt Wellington today. They said it was cold, the hail was hitting them in the face and falling almost parallel to the ground.
I started the day with a couple of cleaning jobs until the deck was dry enough to sand. It was then a case of sanding and stopping as each rain band swept through and waiting for it to dry to continue.
Susan gave Tatiana training on the room cleaning.
Blackberries were picked in sufficient quantity(2.1kg)for Susan to bake 2 pies for the shared tea tonight. The shared tea was once again excellent and the pies were judged by Susan and I as the best yet!
Ilan the boss wants to talk to us about our plans so might have a bit more to report tomorrow night.

Night night cheers Simon

Day 36 Nubeena 2nd March 2011

view from Jetty area Coal Mines

view from jetty area toward Main Settlement

detail of chapel building Coal Mine Settlement

view towards Tasman Island

Remarkable Cave

Evenin' all

Our day off today! We started with a spa and sauna and then a tidy up of our room.

We finally managed to exit the resort after midday to Lucky Ducks for a coffee.
We then proceeded to The Coal Mines Historic Site which was Tasmania's first operational mine. Coal was discovered in 1833 and the mine was staffed by the "most refractory convicts" from Port Arthur. The site is well spread out and we spent a couple of hours exploring and walked around 5km according to the GPS. I was struck by the size of the building stones used. The sandstone was cut on site and some of the blocks must have been nearly a metre long. They are bloody heavy and I wondered how many people were required to lift them 2 metres or more off the ground to build the walls. Maybe they had wooden scaffolds. They did have 600 convicts so maybe it was a case of many hands.

From there we headed further up the road to Lime Bay Nature Reserve where we pottered around taking in the atmosphere. We had planned to do an fairly easy walk to Lagoon Beach which is supposed to be pretty. However at 4:30 with the walk to take 3 hours we decided to return to Port Arthur to purchase a new copy of the very daggy walking book held here at the resort.

On the way through Nubeena we called into the resort at Susan's suggestion to see if anyone was interested in coming along. Rebecca a new arrival accepted and we duly drove via White Beach to Port Arthur. Books were duly purchased and I managed to get stung on my right wrist by a European Wasp that found its way inside my jacket sleeve while browsing the tourist brochures.

After leaving we took a side road into Port Arthur township and drove to the end of the road to Mendoin lookout and Remarkable Cave which was quite spectacular.

We returned to the resort for tea and found we had fresh steaks in the fridge!

Tonight I have repaired my broken fishing rod and it looks ok!

However I was looking in the roof bag this afternoon and not surprisingly after yesterdays downpour there was some water in there. I also noticed some daylight in the inside upper lining so another chore for tomorrow! It is raining here again tonight with some quite heavy showers so once again I don't think deck sanding will be on the cards tomorrow.

Cheers Simon

Day 35 Nubeena Tuesday 1st March 2011

How

An old Indian greeting I believe, but this wasn't the greeting we received today in the cafe, mostly it was "how long will my breakfast be?" Another crazy morning making breakfast, the difference today was there were 50% more breakfasts to cook in half the time as the motorcycle gang was heading off to Swansea. They couldn't have picked a worse day heavy rain, strong bitterly cold winds and even hail. Cleaning up completed, I headed to help Helen and Bob as the chanting gathering was at their place tonight.

After a good few hours I headed back along the "Back Road" so that I could post a letter for Helen and get a coffee for Simon from Lucky Ducks. The back road is gravel so the going was slow and extra slow on account of the weather, I had a scary moment on a hairpin 25km/h corner with a car coming towards me on the wrong side, while Grumbly (the Paj) was a lot bigger than his car I didn't want to explain any dents. Thankfully he swerved and roared past before I could blast the horn at him.

A little further down the road a fantastic view of the bay materialised, a picture postcard scene, and a must go location next stunning sunset.

Later I mooched about a bit waiting for Mr Vacuum and Mop to finish so we could have fish for lunch, and thoughts of a short walk before making blackberry pie for shared tea with the chanters, but the boss had other ideas..........

Simon says,

As mentioned yesterday I was on vacuum and mop detail for about 10 or so rooms today. The highlight was a hailstorm springing from nowhere when I was fetching the mop bucket. It was of such ferocity the stones were a metre inside the door I had left open. The first time I ever recall vacuuming up hailstones from inside a building.

The chief suggested, while I was on room 3, after prompting from his female assistant that the chickens urgently needed more shelter to protect them from the elements. My reply after viewing the torrential rain that was falling and considering I would be dragging sheets of iron around in the downpour to shelter the little darlings, was they were wild animals and they needed to harden up and returned to room 3. My diplomacy skills at work again.

I now know a few more things about Indian Motorcycles. They look very retro, have a hand operated gear change, they use 50 grade (40W70) oil, they have very loud exhausts, they need to be started and revved up for about 30 minutes before you ride them and you need two men to push start them,

Although I had completed my hours I accepted the job of driving to Hobart airport to pick up a new helper. Of course at the last moment complexity. Can you go the hardware store and buy no more gaps and 8 metres of 200*35mm permapine.

I actually timed my arrival perfectly and greeted Tatiana as she was awaiting her baggage. Pleasantries exchanged we proceeded to the carpark where once again my diplomacy skills came to the fore. Funny how sometimes words just jump out of your mouth and you can't stop them. I was at the parking machine where you insert your ticket and pay before you leave. The amount was displayed but every coin i offered fell straight through to the change slot. I tried the card option and that would not work either. I ejected the ticket and tried again for the same result. Of course being an airport carpark people arrive in batches and there was soon a goodly queue to whom i relayed the bad news. Bearing in mind the exit gates are unattended and no other machine was in sight. I hit the help button which of course did nothing and then the suggestions started to flow.

Lady "Try putting a note in". Me shakes head no and thinks the way this machine is going the note will be lost and since my fee was the minimum $2.50 I didn't like my chances on getting change.

Then a male American voice from back in the queue "Here let me try my ticket yours might be faulty" I don't know why, maybe it was me being annoyed or the tone of his voice but I replied to the approaching figure "Oh you are an expert are you?" which was apparently an invitation for him to shout "you lot are so effing defensive here" He put his ticket in and then his money which fell straight through to the change slot, twice. I said nothing, I didn't have to, but maybe I might have smiled a bit which caused him to leave ranting and muttering many F words. As luck would have it he was parked in the same aisle as us and he was still cursing to his companion when I was loading Tatiana's bags into the boot. Thankfully my lips didn't unpurse again and we left without incident. I managed to pay at the booth with my mastercard. I don't know how people with cash only would have got out but I am guessing there would be more than one machine to take money.

We detoured to the Mitre 10 store where they hadn't heard of Permapine. Apparently they only have treated pine here and getting someone to cut it 15 minutes before closing was impossible so we sped back to Nubeena.

I arrived and soon Susan and i were heading up the road for a sing song and shared tea. The tea was good with another excellent blackberry pie from Susan.

It is our day off tomorrow which we found out at 6pm. I can't say I am overjoyed at the short notice as one, the weather is really dirty at the moment and two it doesn't give us any time to plan to do something. Maybe we will go see the snow which should be falling on Mount Wellington. One person at the get together tonight was hoping for an Indian summer in March. I advised him if he wanted that he better go to India.

I carried three Optus phones to Hobart today two of ours and one from another helper to receive messages as there is no Optus service here or in much of the rest of Tasmania. I can't let pass the message that was left on my message bank from someone purporting to be a Telstra representative complaining that I called them bozos in the blog. I didn't recognise the put on voice until they identified them selves. You will keep Jeffrey.

Cheers from the northernmost state of Antartica
