Day 33 Tuesday 10th August 2010 & postscript

Hello from a soggy Charleville. I mentioned last night there was a bit of rain about. That turned to a lot and was quite heavy after midnight. The official gauge at the airport said 20mm. The canvas held up pretty well apart from a couple of minor leaks associated with pvc reinforcing patches. Canvas after being stiched leaks until it gets wet and the fibres swell and seal so i am told. This is consistent with what i have observed obviously pvc doesn't swell. Anyway we were snug and dry. Outside however had many pools of water laying on the grass. Of course the biggest one was outside our door. During the course of the day the campsite got in a vacuum trailer and sucked up water off the ground including our area since we went and made them aware our tent was floating :-). However the clouds disappated and we had a breezy sunny day good for drying and battery charging with the solar panel. Water leaked into the Rhino roof bag again so i was hopping around on the roof rack getting the bag and some of the contents dry. I think i have identified where the ingress was and sprayed it with some waterproof spray which may work although it's a seam so there is doubt. This was also applied to the minor drip areas in the camper so fingers crossed. After our mopping up operation we took a trip to town to got a decent cup of coffee sharing a table with other visitors from Adelaide. We also went to see if local bike shops existed. Whilst there was a bit of stock in the toyworld section of a mixed goods store there wasn't the specialist stuff we require to do the repairs to Susan's so it is still looking like Mt Isa. The day passed quickly with some more shopping and laundry. So a day where we didn't really do a lot though we were quite busy.
There was a stampede of horses around the park this morning which is something you don't see everyday. This also explained the large lumps of excrement on the grass. I was dreading bumping into the kangaroo that had produced it!
Tomorrow we will book a session at the observatory if the sky is clear. We will hang around here for another couple of days before pushing on. Word is that the locust plague is going to be bigger and early than expected so that should be interesting to say the least when we start moving again with the insectophobe in the party.
Here's hoping for more sunny skies.
Cheers Simon

......POSTSCRIPT

This campsite Evening Star is a working cattle station (Thurley) as well as diversifying to cater to the tourist trade.

We spent the evening by the campfire and got talking to Gavin and Maria who are helping at this park for the season, they have been on the road for 7 years and are originally from Victoria.

We shared stories about what one can expect on the road, travelling options (caravan v's trailer) etc and generally had a few laughs. Conversation got around to the Copley Caravan Park still my number 1 (reminds me I should compile a list of the good, the bad, and the ugly of parks/stops)..... Gavin and Maria shared some tales of their time at Copley and Shirley and Daves hospitality..... it is a small world!
