Hi All,
The day started for me with a shower, delicious hot water. Showering each day seems a bit of a luxury after the lick and promise washes we had in the Tarkine.
We pottered about then went back to Burnie so Simon could buy another inverter for the camper trailer battery box. The one that used to be located there in 2010 is in the car. Simon is busy dreaming up some other power options which will incorporate the water tank and the hot water cube. I will be excited to have a drawer in the trailer so having hot water on tap and plug in power in the camper is just a tad too much luxury.
I managed to make a Skype call to Maddie in Canada and purchase some fabric from Spotlight, I am toying with the idea of making some pocket money on the road......
In the afternoon we drove along the “Coast to Canyon” touring route to visit the Leven Canyon. The information tells us this area was logged quite late on compared to other locations due to its steepness and the shallow rocky river not capable of floating a boat. The 108 kilometres of the river are apparently pristine with natural flora mostly undisturbed. We walked up to the Eagle Lookout track and across the Forest Stairs link of 697 steps, up to Cruickshanks Lookout. It was only a short walk of 1 hour but plenty steep!
Walking in this bush was quite a contrast to the Tarkine, I was mentally making comparisons as we trekked. The aspect of the Tarkine which impressed me most was the ability to walk off formed tracks. Being remote and off the tourist trail the Tarkine has such an amazing untouched quality about it. So, so quiet. You knew for sure you would not meet another soul whilst out walking. Today we met 6 other groups of tourists. Walking along a well hewn track makes for easier going but does not evoke the same sense of discovery as scrambling through bush.
After taking pictures and videos we drove a kilometre down the road to reach the canyon floor. Only another 286 steps down to the fast flowing river. More pictures and videos taken; Simon perfecting the stitch function on his new camera.
The Leven Valley area is somewhat like Sheffield and Nowhere Else, maybe more picturesque. Vast stretches of rolling green hills, probably all cleared a centenary ago and margins of forest, natural and plantation. The soil looks as good as Sheffield deep reddish brown. Another possible location for future consideration! Also Burnie appears to be a more attractive town than Devonport, even with its lack of Laundromat.
Simple tasty dinner tonight thanks to Annette’s Tomato and Chilli relish.
No plans for tomorrow as yet, my vote is to stay at this park for a few more days, it will be quieter again tomorrow when the Tasmanians head back to work after the long weekend.
Night All
