Day 57 Friday 3rd September 2010 & postscript

Hi All,

Honestly we can pick 'em....Burketown Caravan Park is under the flight path, and an ultralight did fly over Lawn Hill, what with Mt Isa, Longreach etc I reckon 95% of all caravan parks are located under flight paths.

Another frustration of paper thin walls (canvas) is snoring.... As if it isn't annoying enough to be kept awake by partners snoring (remedied by an elbow in the ribs) I am at a loss to know what to do about a neighbours snoring in the next tent/swag/caravan.... maybe I should start a list of campsites where neighbours snoring is audible. So far Evening Star, Longreach and Burketown, maybe I should take Simon's lead and wear earplugs.... problem is that just amplifies my own snoring and wakes me up! Ahh what a dilemma.

Today we went fishing again, on the wharf just after 0900, for a 3 hour stint... decided not to try for crabs today and had a reasonably profitable time catching 4 "keepers" all bream. Also caught a couple of spotty grunter bream, catties and an unknown fish all thrown back. I was awarded "catch of the day" with a ceremonial photo.

Back to the camp for lunch, showers (ahhhh) and washing, fishing clothes do pong ugh! Did a spot of shopping, mushrooms are $15.37 a kilo in Burketown and lemons $7.07 a kilo, fruit choices were apples and oranges (rather battered) and no bananas.

Packing commences tonight so we can get an early start tomorrow to travel the last 250kms of dirt road to Normanton and on to Karumba (the prawn capital of Australia). Can't work it out last night we sat outside consuming our crab feast untroubled by bugs, tonight there is the continual chorus of slaps and mutters, can't even see what little blighters are causing the bites.

Nice tea of fish 2 fillets each with salad, and we have two more meals of fish in the fridge. Can't wait for the $15 kilo prawns at Karumba, other people we have met on the road have recommended them highly.

Cheers

Susan

......Postscript

Must say it was enjoyable to wander down to the pier throw a line in and catch some quality fish and crabs in the last couple of days. If you are not into fishing then there is buggar all to do here. The two local sights are the scattered remains of the old boiling down works and some deceased non existant historical tree. Subsequently most people only stay one night at the park. Those that don't, spend half the day fishing and the rest of the day drinking beer. I am somewhat amused we have managed to outfish our neighbours with their two boats on each of the last 2 days. However I am sure there are also some competent fishermen here with boats who are doing very nicely. I did not attempt to persuade Susan we should launch our boat into the domain of the saltwater crocodile especially with the reports of a 4.5m beastie being sighted at the ramp.
On the plus side the 2 convenience stores here are both of good standard and diesel was only $1.50 per litre. I can't say i will be sad to see the last of the dirt roads for a while although the people next door were saying the Normanton/Karumba road is rough as guts, so that might be a fitting last hurrah. Time will tell.
I have also been pondering the price of bait prawns. I am told eating prawns at Karumba are $15 per kilo which makes the $6 i am paying for manky old bait prawns where you get about 10 seem like a bit of rip off. Another of lifes mysteries.

Finally it would be remiss of me not to mention the stirling effort Susan put in fishing over the last couple of days. For someone who has done very little fishing she has put in a great effort. Especially when swaddled in her bug proof outfit!
Although if he sandflies are as bad as they say at Korumba i will be joining her. It will look like the invasion of the mummies.

Cheers for now, Simon

PS shows how out of touch i am i didn't realise the footy finals started tonight!
