Good afternoon all,
We are currently in Croydon caravan Park which is about 220km from Karumba. We arose at daybreak about 645 after consuming a bit of wine during last nights social evening with our neighbours. Consequently no prepacking of the awning and the kitchen was achieved last night. We hummed and hared about whether we were going to stay another night but in the end i decided "It's time to go S2." Packing was efficient and after breakfasting we were out of the park by 10 pausing to confirm we will visit new found friends in Melbourne when we get there after New Years. We also took the opportunity before leaving to wash the red dust from parts of the camper trailer i had been unable to access when set up yesterday. The whole rig now looks a bit more presentable. We stopped at the Sunset Tavern to enjoy a bean coffee, passed through Normanton arriving at Croydon just after lunch. We did sight the Gulflander train travelling the other way. We arrived at Croydon sufficiently early to consider whether we should push on. However a quick tour convinced us that there was sufficiently interesting stuff here to pause over night and tomorrow morning. After steakburgers at the supermarket/takeaway we decided to set up the swag for the night. Nice little park with a pool, free washing machines and shade, important because it is currently 37C!
I realised this morning i had taken very few pictures at Karumba compared to Lawn Hill. I ascribed this to the different style of accomodation with Lawn Hill being bush style with a focus on enjoying the environment and Karumba being a tourist park with the focus on fishing and drinking. The park is 75% booked for next season. While Susan was in the office they received a booking for 3 months. You definately would need a boat there. There is slightly more facilities than Burketown but the focus is still on fishing and drinking. However since the road is sealed to Karumba and not to Bourketown it gets more crowded with caravanners. It is also at the beachfront not that anyone swims in the sea :-).
Tonight we will eat at the hotel another nice Queenslander style timber building.
......Postscript
Sitting outside next to the swag a warm evening must be over 30. Good honest food at the pub and a few beers. The whole town seems to be run by female backpackers. One from UK, one from europe in the general store and 3 from Ireland in the pub. It's going to be great in the swag tonight just the insect screen between us and the stars!!
