Well another balmy night in Karumba. I just wish the damn tides were a bit more friendly for fishing! This morning we went to town after breakfast to investigate battery chargers at the marine store (see yesterdays blog). There was one suitable ( but expensive) but the sun came out so i kept my hand in my pocket and set up the solar panel. After lunch, which we didn't have, we did the tourist thing and visited the barramundi hatchery which is run by the Gulf Fishermans association and staffed by volunteers. It was a good tour with some hand feeding of pilchards to the fish. They have some big fish! i.e. over a metre in length. The way they take the hand food is quite explosive. My video camera was back at camp so unfortunately the video posted is one of the van park.
The town has a wharf which is used for live cattle export and for ferrying zinc ore out to larger bulk carriers that moor 25km offshore. It also has a Raptis cold store and shop. We arrived after it had closed at 3 so missed out on prawns today.
Later in the afternoon Susan was interviewed by a researcher while i kept out of the way commencing cleaning all the dirt and stones from the camper. This lead straight into the happy hour where we consumed a bit more than perhaps we should have. Tea was fish donated by the people that left this morning.
Cheers Simon
