Day 66 Sunday 12th September 2010
Apostlebird
Cocky Apple
Cocky Apple
Black Tree Orchid
Hi Folks,
We packed and said goodbye to Cobbold Gorge this morning. The packing was quick and efficient all done in around 90 minutes which is about half the time from the early days. We trundled at modest pace along the 80km or so of dirt back to Georgetown and headed east towards Mount Surprise. The weather was warm and temperatures well into the 30's. The 146 km passed quickly as we listened to the final chapter of our 22 hour audio book Bryce Courtneys "Fishing for Stars" which was a good read, well listen. Will be looking for another Bryce Courtney when we get to civilisation.
Mount Surprise has an under/side vehicle spray wash station to stop the carraige of weed seeds through the country side. I drove through it(twice)and it washed a fair bit of dust off the car and trailer. The downside was the water was probably bore water judging by the salt rings left behind when it evaporated. We refuelled and did some food shopping whilst deciding that we would not stay at Mount Surprise although there looked to be things to do and would push on to "The Ungara Experience." Since the 3G coverage map was a bit hard to interpret i took the opportunity to publish the previous 2 days blogs because i know people are sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for them.
We arrived at Ungara mid afternoon and took a powered site which was in a good location although a bit sloping. An efficient setup followed and we were immediately struck by the fact the weather is cooler here presumably since we are closer to the coast. It was only 30 when we arrived and we have actually pulled the sleeping bag out of storage for tonight. There are a lot of bushwalks to do here and other activities. Tomorrow morning we are booked to do the tour of the lava tubes. We have already decided to leave Wednesday morning and will probably stay in striking distance of Cairns Thursday night so i can get to the dentist for 9 on Friday. It's a pity we are missing some experiences at the moment but even on the road you sometimes have to face the tyranny of the clock. Touch wood my tooth has settled down even though its a bit disconcerting having it in 2 pieces.
The pictured cocky apple blooms only last for a couple of hours and drop off. These were at Cobbold Gorge camp site along with our old friends the Apostle Birds. Also in the campground was the pictured Black Tree Orchid about 4 metres up in the air.
Cheers Simon
