Day 64 Friday 10th September 2010
Ammonite fossils
Juvenile Night Heron (i think)
Hi All,
We awoke this morning before daybreak. A good breeze had sprung up in the night and cooled things off nicely. We actually had to get under the sheet. After breakfast and packing we hopped on our bicycles for a trundle around Croydon. Some interesting old buildings all wood of course dating back to the turn of the century when the town was in its gold mining heyday. It was interesting the antipathy towards the Chinese labour that came to work the goldfields and since they were not permitted to take part in mining ended up being store holders and market gardeners. In many ways attitudes haven’t changed much in 100 years. Susan had a last swim and we headed for a quick look at the local water supply/recreation area Lake Belmore, which is stocked with barramundi and the Chinatown reserve and then down the road to Georgetown (approx 150km)
We arrived just after lunch and had a quick reccy. The decision was taken that since there wasn’t much to do apart from viewing the rock collection we would head to Cobbold Gorge which is about 90km south. We had an excellent lunch in the local hardware/tourist/takeaway shop and viewed the rock collection at the Terrestrial Centre. This was excellent with some fantastic specimens.
Unfortunately the road to Cobbold Gorge was largely unsealed so all the good cleaning work of the vehicles has come to nothing. We arrived at Cobbold at around 5 and set up the camper. We neglected to buy milk, bread and wine on the way so now have some longlife milk, defrosted bread and Susan is learning to enjoy beer again. Looks a nice spot with good facilities. Tomorrow is the tour up the gorge.
Cheers Simon
