Day 115 Sunday 31st October 2010
We awoke a bit lacklustre this morning after a late night catching up on account keeping etc. I maintain a spreadsheet to track expenses, which as Simon reported a while ago also gives a reasonable prediction of when we will be destitute. After accommodation and fuel which are on equal par our expenses rank tours, groceries alcohol then lattes.
Emails checked confirmed our next HelpX stop as Hervey Bay, job involves yard work (5 acre block) planning a pergola, digging a duck pond, household chores, child minding and acting as an entertainer for childrens parties, the mind boggles..... Simon has volunteered me for the task.... hmmm.
We continued our window prep and painting with another 4 finished today only 12 to go this house has 23 windows and that is just the ground floor, as with many queenslander houses the windows are of the louvre type, just perfect to catch the breeze, unfortunately the breeze stops dead here at 7:00pm!
After lunch with our hosts we ventured to Joumana Falls, about 25kms south, the area is a national park and has several unpowered campsites, the march flies were firece and we both took up a step, swat gait for the 1km climb to the lookout.
There are rockpools for a dip, but not enough water to swim in, the water was clear and cool, and the rocks smooth and slippery. The falls were flowing steadily but obviously much reduced from the normal wet season flow.
On the way "home" we added 2 more lattes to our spreadsheet and waists.
Tea was chilli con carne cooked by Cynthia and the neighbours and their children joined us. Tea was followed by some guessing games and karaoke, then a horror movie, at this stage we proceeded to bed, as noises emanating from the street are possibly signalling the progression of halloween hopefuls.
Happy halloween all - apparently now observed in Oz!

Day 114 Saturday 30th October 2010
The fountain
The Post Office
Water Tower with Italian influence
Jubilee Building circa 1935 for sale - only $335,000
Hi Folks,
Another day another dollar, well a help exchange dollar anyway. Our hosts decamped to Townsville at 0 dark hundred hours leaving us in charge! We made a start on the next batch of windows, filling, sanding, masking and undercoating.
Mid morning I was standing in the camper and could hear bagpipes playing "We will Rock You". I am not sure what Freddie Mercury would have made of that!
After lunch we strolled to town thinking we would get a coffee however as is the custom most of the shops close at 12 on Saturday. A moment of merriment occurred when Susan in her eagerness to examine stock in the homewares shop window head butted the glass. I popped into Supercheap and picked up some quality half price spanners and square drives that were on runout. They looked exactly the same as the ones in the Stanley toolkits. We also called into the Herbert River Orchid Society Show in a shop in the main street.
Coffee shops were thin on the ground however the Maccas had McCafe and it was good! We returned and did some more painting before heading to the Maraka Mardi Gras in the town centre. After a meal, a drink and a look at the entertainment we headed home stopping off at a coffee shop/bar that had actually reopened for the evening.
It was then time to sit down and nut out our schedule for when we leave here. This is a testing task. We are trying for a stop at Hervey Bay around the 10th of November for a week. There is a fair bit to see as we travel down the coast and I feel like we are going to sprint through several areas but time is ticking away so it can't be avoided.
Cheers Simon

Day 113 Friday 29th October 2010
Hi Folks,
A quiet but busy day which is why this isn't being written until Saturday morning.
We continued full speed with our window project although i took some time out to examine the reason for yesterdays flat battery. After fully charging the battery yesterday it was down to 12.3 volts again this morning. Cutting to the chase the Redarc controller that disconnects the second battery when the primary battery drops below 12.7 volts was not dropping out till below 12.4v meaning thats its solenoid was drawing over half an amp all the time. I have disconnected it at the moment and all appears fine. I also had a free battery check done with the you beaut Century battery tester at Supercheap in Ingham which showed all ok. So the controller is added to the list of broken things to be attended to.
After tea Glen, Cynthia and ourselves popped into one of the local pubs for a drink and then home to bed. Our host is heading to Townsville in the morning for more hardware supplies. There isn't actually a lot of touristy stuff to do around Ingham. The highest drop water fall in Australia, Wallerman is an hour and a half away and the sea about 35km. This is one thing we will have to consider when we select HelpX places in future. i.e. choose somewhere that has some attractions close by. At the moment we are working most of the day primarily to get the job finished and move on which is not the way it is supposed to work. Ideally you would work half the day and have leisure for the other half.
One interesting thing is that this house in the middle of town was flooded in 2009 when the bushfires were on in Victoria. They had 300mm of rain in 6 hours. Glens canoe got swept away! After the flood receded and cleaning up begain it was flooded again 4 days later. There is no perception that we are on a flood plain or close to a river.
Anyway must start work so cheers for now.
Simon
PS A Wicked Camper driven by back packers managed to travel a short distance the wrong way along the divided road in the main street. The motorist backing his car out of the centre parking looking over his right shoulder was a bit surprised when he got hit from the left.

Day 112 Thursday 29th October 2010
Hello from Ingham home of the Sicilian connection.
We continued on our window refurbishment task today. We have actually finished one with another 4 in undercoat.
2 low lights today. The first was the battery on the Pajero was flat around mid morning. I recharged it enough to be able to start the car, with a combination of the camper trailer battery and our 4 amp charger. Supercheap had a 20 amp charger on special so i picked one up since a 4amp charger would take a week to charge the battery. Battery fully recharged and measured a half amp draw with the the ignition off which seems a bit high. Investigations to continue.
The second lowlight was when Susan and I went to town to have a coffee late afternoon. Stepping off the kerb Susan tripped and skinned a knee and to a lesser extent elbow and hands. A new pedestrian ramp and kerb had been installed and the road excavated, When the excavation was filled it wasn't flush with the exisiting road leaving a nice step to trip on. I shall visit the council office tomorrow and stir the pot!
Had another nice tea with the highlight being a bread and butter pudding with dates rather than sultanas.
Still can't get over these cane toads wandering around the kitchen eating bugs as i type. Only in FNQ!
Cheers Simon

Day 111 Wednesday 28th October 2010
Hi Folks,
Today we said goodbye to Mo and Astrid our fellow Helpexers as they headed south on their journey. It was a pity we were together for such a short time. More details exchanged and another contact on Facebook.
Glen our host was unable to source the paint for the kitchen in Ingham it has to be bought in Townsville. This being the case we have swung our energies into refurbishing the window frames. These have been previously filled in places and sanded however for whatever reason (the wet winter mainly) not completed. We have had to do some more filling but it is a good job as it is one we can finish in our time frame here.
I did some more waterproofing of the roof bag which is sort of like building the pyramids. That's about all to report. Weather still good. I think this is actually how it is supposed to be. On the weather report couple of days back they said the hottest place in the state that day @ 40C was the Century Zinc mine which is a stones throw from Lawn Hill where we stayed a few weeks back.
Cheers Simon
Day 110 Tuesday 26th October 2010
Hi Kids,
A short blog tonight. It is 11pm 23.6 degrees and a dew has fallen on the ground. Today after breakfast we started in earnest on our task of the upstairs kitchen. Builders bog was applied to doors, veneer strip ironed onto shelves, filler sanded, floor swept, sink cleaned and preparation made for painting. We now need our host to supply the paint. This is a huge renovation virtually the whole residence so a big undertaking.
After lunch i reneged on my vow to cut drain holes in the roof bag preferring to start coating it with the water based sealing compound. Its last chance. I also coated the bottom of the swag as the first stage of its reproofing. For tea out host provided pizzas from eagle boys and Susan prepared her sticky date treat which was much enjoyed by Mo and Astrid. Wine was consumed and a jovial evening enjoyed with some unique Aussie phrases explained to our visitors. The highlight was when a reviled cane toad received canonisation for swallowing a flying mole cricket that had the girls screaming and ducking for cover in the kitchen. A band of 4 or 5 toads enters the house on dusk and proceeds to demolish the insects that stray onto the floor. After tea we shared a Jack Absalom DVD with Mo and Astrid as they will not have time to visit the outback and wanted to get an idea of what it was like. They leave for points south tomorrow and New Zealand in December for 3 months before returning home. They have been great fun in the short time we have known them and we will miss them. We also showed them the Camps 5 book and they will be purchasing one ASAP.
I am not quite sure how much work we will do tomorrow as there doesn't seem to be much paint in evidence. Anyway i have some waterproofing projects of my own to go on with.
The weather seems to have stabilised in sunny and fine mode. About bloody time!
Goodnight, thank you and may your god go with you.

Day 109 Monday 25th of October 2010
Greetings from Ingham our new stopping point for about a week. We stayed at the caravan park last night. Thank goodness for aerogard and flyspray as the mosquitos were the worst we have encountered on our journey so far. Mercifully the weather has improved and the forecast is fine for the next week although that's just hearsay at the moment. We packed steadily this morning and left after having showers at around 10. Once parked in the main street Susan proceeded to the bank for a long session which consisted mainly of sitting around waiting to be served. We had coffees and lunch and ventured to the residence of our new HelpEx host Glen. The house is a large rambling Queenslander which is being renovated. Currently in residence are Glen and Cynthia with Helpexer's Astrid and Mo(ritz) from Germany. At this stage it looks like we will be renovating a kitchen upstaiirs which should be interesting. We have set the camper up in the back yard and will use it as our sleeping quarters. It is very bug proof as the mosquitos have only abated slightly on our move into town.
Mo the physicist and Astrid the school teacher cooked Quiche and apple crumble for tea. I am out here typing while the sounds of a scrabble game drift in from next door.
Tomorrow we start work although i will be taking some time to once again dry the roof bag. I am going to add some drain holes to the bottom to allow the water to escape where it pools between the slats. An admission of defeat in my crusade to stop it from leaking!. I also have a large pot of canvas waterproof as it is time to retreat the swag and the weather will ensure speedy drying.
The house here is open which is interesting when cane toads start hopping around my feet as i type!
Goodnight from Katter country.
Cheers Simon

Day 108 Sunday 24th October 2010
Castle 2 the original kiosk
Today started with a grumpy attack..... Simons of course; I am never grumpy in the morning!
It had rained overnight and the mattress of the swag became damp due to the incline of the ground, not that it affected our sleep. Then water was found in the roof bag AGAIN, but this is nothing new either, nothing was damp except the bottom of the bag as we line it with floor mats to protect all of the other contents. Before we could pack everything up there was a shower again turning Mr Grumpy up another notch.
We did manage to get in a walk of Paronella Gardens before breakfast, so that we could see anything missed yesterday and take more photos, well I took photos and Simon continued to curse his non functioning camera, he did manage to take some video though. (see photo and video extra)
We had breakfast, and parked the camper in the car park while we met Lisa and Peter for coffee at the cafe on site. I purchased the history and picture book of the park, a couple of knickknack, looked through the museum while Simon fiddled with his camera some more.
We headed out for Ingham about 11:30, wondering if it would be a stop or a drive through, as we haven't yet heard from out next host Glen yet.
Simon had a massive attack of leg cramps, so I decided to drive so he could stretch out.
We drove on the back road the old Bruce Highway eventually joining the current highway and a noticeable improvement in the quality and width.
A detour via Mission Beach to see what every one talks about, and a bite to eat. We did drive up to a new housing estate where $390,000 gets you a 4395 square metre block with sea views adjoining the rain forest. Pass....
We then drove through Tully (wettest place in Australia; it wasnt raining!) then stopped for latte's in Cardwell, where we called Glen and left a voice message.
On to Ingham where we decided to book into the local caravan park and hopefully a call. We had just finished setting up and the call came (we could have saved the $28 and camped in Glens yard).
Chinese take away for tea, I couldn't face swatting mossies whilst cooking, not that we have purchased any food to cook, we could have had steamed asparagus (all that is in the fridge).
Simons grumpiness has settled though I am watching him as he has sworn to take a knife to the roof bag - but only to cut drainage holes in the base!
Cheers
Susan.
