Day 12 Nubeena Sunday 6th February 2011

The little lake and the new yellow boat to be floated this week

Slasher Simon

Weeding in the veggie patch

Dear Family and Friends,

It is hard to believe we have been in Nubeena for a week already, where does the time go?

Today started for us collecting blackberries just after dawn, we wandered down to the patch Simon discovered yesterday and gathered about a kilo in an hour. Our harvesting done mostly in silence soaking up the sun and cool damp air but punctuated every so often by an expletive when prickles caught our thumb or bum. I still have an embedded thorn in my right thumb which will hopefully make its way out in a few days.

After consulting the jobs list we undertook to clean out the garden shed, which is now twice as big as it was this morning, amazing how much space can be gained when order is restored. Simon then lent a hand to Ben (UK) to retrieve the bogged ride on mower, initially planning to pull it out with the tractor until they discovered a flat battery. Simon being rather fanatical about battery life carries all sorts of stuff I don't fully understand and was, of course, able to recharge the tractors cells and get the thing working. He then learnt how to drive the thing and did some slashing of grass on the block.

I started work on weeding one of the vegie gardens and was joined by Ady. One of the aims of the resort is to produce food for the eventual residents along the line of a community garden concept.

Treating ourselves to a spa meant a late dinner of garlic chilli prawns and rice plus left over greens from last nights community meal. Then I made my first blackberry pie, don't think I have made pastry from scratch for about 20 years, so was expecting the worst. And we can now be regarded as the Laurel and Hardy of pie making after having to transfer the cooking from the cafe kitchen to our unit due to lock up time. By 9:30 the masterpiece (literally!!!) came out of the oven and was devoured by Simon, Ben, Jiwon and myself, damn fine pie it was, will need to add this one to my repertoire.

Now time to sleep off the good living.

Cheers Susan
