View down the hill to the back paddock

Hello Browsers,

The start of another week. Our American helpers had the day off today for a football game. Being Green Bay Packers supporters they were happy with the result.

This arrangement meant that Susan was on motel room duty this morning. For my part I spent some time trying to figure out the nut thread and pitch to secure the covers over the belts on the tractor slasher. I helped Susan start the decanting of the apricot wine into the fermentation vessels and then made my way back to the tractor to do some slashing. We have started cleaning up the back paddock down the hill and the slasher is much faster than the brushcutter. The trip down the hill is a bit steep so being a chicken I crawl down in first gear. The first stint went well until the belts jumped off. Fortunately the WD40 I sprayed on the adjusters yesterday had done it's work and I was able to refit and retension them. I returned after lunch for a second stint which also went well until the sliding coupling that drives the cutting deck off the rear of the tractor decided to part company when I was lifting the deck up. It jammed itself hard against the frame leaving the tractor stuck since the selector for the drive was stuck meaning the main drive to the wheels was also stuck. However the owner of the resort Ilan and I were able to free it after the appropriate amount of hammering and large crowbars. It is never nice to break things that don't belong to you even if they are 50 years old and have been sitting idle. Looks like it will be an easy fix so slashing should resume asap. I shall have to put tractor driving (and repairing) in my resume.

The weather here has been cool, windy with broken cloud. Some warm sunny weather would be nice. I see the forecast says we will be heating up to whole 23 by Wednesday.

Tomorrow is our day off. I was thinking we would go bushwalking but Susan says we are going to Hobart! The soles of my expensive Italian hiking boots have parted company after a previous repair with contact glue. I shall repair them this time with 5 minute araldite which doesn't give you much time to get the positioning right. The trip to Hobart will give me the chance tolook see for some new ones. I would like to fix these since apart from the soles falling off they are in excellent nick. Also tomorrow we must also make more blackberry pies!

As I sit here typing the blog HelpXers are slaving in the kitchen to produce a communal tea. Those not working are playing backgammon and we are all sipping red wine.

Hope you are all keeping well and enjoying life.

cheers Simon
