Evenin'
A warm sunny day in the apple isle. I find it hard to believe the maximum here was only 17! Maybe due to the fact that a northerly breeze here is a sea breeze. Our task today was to start some paving next to the ramp into the house. Before this was commenced the gutter come missing downpipe above this area had to be repaired so that the paving wasn't damaged by the leakage. The gutter is old and rusted like the roof in the old section of the house so the repair only has to last until they are both renewed, which is just as well since it was being done by a bumbling amateur (me!). The repair of the corner mitre of the gutter was quite a clever piece of work by me substituting 5 minute araldite for solder in the corner fillet. I then enlarged the hole in the gutter base to accept the down connector also very skilfully. Wire brushing removed the rust and the substrate although thin wasn't too bad. Using previously used cartridges of silicone which I cut open to bypass the cured sections I trowelled it on. I measured and glued the downpipe and everything was going well until the last operation gluing, it to the discharge pipe. The wheels then fell off. Without going into the details it ended up serviceable but far less neat than it could have been with lots of silicone and glue smudges on the pipes. Anyway it should last until replacement fingers crossed. We decided to finish the compost bins before starting the pavement. Susan had continued digging around the borders of the lawn and finished shovelling the compost after construction was finished. No time for paving so i whizzed into Sheffield to get some eye drops from the chemist which was closed from 1pm. Since Monday is a holiday here (show day) i thought to be comfortable i would drive the 30 km to Devonport where surprise surprise all the chemists there were closed too. Had i suddenly fallen into the time warp and been transported to country Queensland? I bought some drops from Woolworths, not the ones I wanted but they should ok. I bought a few other treats too mainly because the had a 10c/litre fuel offer.
We have many bees zooming around since yesterday when about 20 hives were delivered into the field across the road. We also have a goodly blowfly population no doubt a result of all the cattle here. I have killed 3 tonight in our bedroom, great!
Kaye and Susan cooked a lovely pasta tea tonight and Susan prepared a sticky date pudding. All very nice and washed down by some good wine. After dinner we played a new (to us) dice game which we both lost.
Tomorrow another day off so we are going to the craft and food festival in Deloraine amongst other locations in our travels.
night folks
Simon
