Spirit of Tasmania leaves Devonport
Hi All,
We had a day off today under dry, grey, mostly wind free, skies. Blessed relief from hay fever. The morning was spent fiddling, doing little jobs and catching up in different areas. Now that we are reliant solely on our own internet our usage has jumped up. I thought I would recharge the prepaid service I used last year when we were close to our monthly limit. It is more expensive than the plan but does prevent having to lop off body parts and send them to Telstra to accommodate their ridiculous excess usage charges. However it looks like the SIM card no longer works probably because it has lain unused for 12 months. I also wanted to try the prepaid card in the modem that won't work with the new router but alas it wasn't to be.
We drove in the early afternoon to Burnie via Paloona Dam. This is an impoundment of the same stream as Lake Barrington and is also a hydro plant. We arrived at Burnie mid afternoon and immediately adjourned to the fish and chip shop for lunch. The whole area reminds me of Port Elliot in terms of housing styles, rocky beaches and a train line. We called in to the Makers Centre which as the name implies is a crafty place. It is a new building located adjacent the Burnie Sports Stadium. It now contains the paper figure sculptures we saw in 2007. We wanted to have a coffee in their cafe but it closed at 4. I should be glad it was open at all as most businesses here close at 1pm on Saturday apart from the big chains such as Harvey Norman, Supercheap Auto etc. The major centres resemble ghost towns on Sundays. After we left the Arty place I twigged that the tents in the sports ground indicated that Tasmania were playing South Australia in a one day game today. There has been some local promotion but I would have to say the place didn't look parked out.
We drove onto Wynyard which was probably the prettiest town we went through. Burnie being dominated by the paper mill, an ugly old quarry plus containers and woodchips on the wharf. On the way back we passed through Penguin which was also not too bad on the eye then Ulverstone before stopping at the Mersey Bluff over looking the sea at Devonport. After watching the Spirit of Tasmania depart we arrived home at 8pm. As I type we have just had a long heavy shower so I shall be able to check my waterproofing of the seams on the camper cover tomorrow. If it is dry inside I will happily apply the Armorall i bought today to the cover. If the canvas is wet I will unhappily apply the Armorall.
Seeing as the wet cat just bolted in through his door and attacked my socked foot I shall include him in the blog. His name is Hydro and he came as a stray living on the property. As mentioned previously he brought in a rabbit carcass but of late it is small skinks that he catches and plays with. If we see them in time we release them. However yesterday he was in the bad books as he brought in a male blue wren. This has earned him another 2 bells for his collar. I suggested a 3kg brass bell attached to one of his legs.
Night folks!
Simon
